Virtual Millennium

Exploring the Wonderful World of Virtual Reality and CGI. Video games and video game imagery is a fascinating topic of inspiration for me… mainly because of the video game industry and it’s influential source, the military industrial complex.

Together, we are looking at a 76 billion dollar industry, a monster that spins it’s web in virtually every media channel around the globe. Filled with high-tech weapons, gung-ho desert soldiers, and terrorist scenarios ripped from the headlines, today’s ultra-realistic video games have moved to the forefront of the militarization of popular culture. According to research conducted by The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, the majority of parents polled are worried about the psychological and physiological effects of violent video games on their children. After all, video games are supposed to be taken simply as pure entertainment, right?

Somewhere down the line, things changed and today we are asking ourselves questions; Are video games changing the way a new generation thinks about computers, media, culture, war and peace? This collection exists to provoke thoughts… and possibly, answers to some of these questions.

YOMI – T.G.M.B.

YOMI-T.G.M.B. Is a character Milushev designed and developed over the past two years. T.G.M.B. or ‘The Gas Mask Bastard’ is a creature born out of the polluted womb of our society.

He is the Giver of Life and Messenger of Death. YOMI exists in a world he helped destroy, and for that reason he is forced to wear a gas mask. A mere image of what used to be human he appears ghostly throughout history, reminding us of our destructive nature. Conversely, YOMI is a poster child for peace.

This new collection is an echo, a painful reminder that we live in a culture where people are more offended by “swear” words and middle fingers than they are by famine, warfare and the destruction of our environment.

Biography

Born in Haskovo, Nikolay Milushev is a Bulgarian artist whose complex paintings and drawings combine pop imagery and illustrative art with fanciful realism. Influenced by Lowbrow movement aka Pop Surrealism, video games and street culture – his work often features social and political commentaries on human nature and how we, as a society, deal with every day challenges of life and death, peace and war, love and hate- cultural globalisation. Masterful draftsmenship and vivid color are essential parts of the style that creates Milushev’s striking and sometimes psychotic universe.

During his high school years he studied at the art school in his native Haskovo after which he moved to the capitol, Sofia, and took lessons in the National Academy of Art. In September of 2001 he moved to the United States where he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He has participated in exhibitions in Europe as well as USA and South America, and his work is courtesy of many private collections followed by several publications and art catalogues. Milushev currently lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA.
